Vishnu Sahasranama
Rs. 1.00
Ten figures of Vishnu stand in two rows of five, each labelled with an invocation: Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha and Vamana above; Parashurama, Rama, Krishna, Buddha and Kalki below. The thousand names fill the bands around them in dense, fine script.
The Vishnu Sahasranama is among the best-known Sanskrit hymns, and the ten avatars are the most familiar account of Vishnu's descents. Set together, the names gain a visual vocabulary: the viewer sees the forms that the names describe.
Blue-skinned figures against a saturated yellow ground read clearly from a distance, while the small script rewards close study. A Narayan Narayan border runs around the whole piece, turning the composition into one continuous invocation. It is the most text-rich work in the collection.
